About the Event

Food systems lie at the core of sustainable development shaping livelihoods, health, ecosystems, and economic growth. In South Asia, where agriculture and food-related services remain central to people’s lives, strengthening food systems is both a developmental and strategic priority.

Over the past few decades, the region has reduced hunger and poverty through transformative policies such as the Green Revolution and large-scale nutrition and social protection programs. Yet, new and interlinked challenges, including inflation, climate extremes, resource degradation, demographic shifts, and diet-related diseases, demand bold leadership and evidence-informed action.

To address these, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in partnership with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), convened a high-level regional policy dialogue, “Food Policy for a Changing World: Lessons and Priorities for South Asia,” on September 16, 2025 at Hotel Jaypee Siddharth, New Delhi.

The dialogue also marked the South Asia launch of the 2025 Global Food Policy Report (GFPR).

Objectives

  • Launch and contextualize the 2025 GFPR with a South Asia focus.
  • Facilitate high-level dialogue on emerging food policy priorities.
  • Foster collaboration among governments, regional bodies, and researchers.

Thematic Priorities

  1. Food Systems Transformation – advancing inclusive, productive, and resilient agri-food systems.
  2. Environment and Climate Change – mainstreaming climate adaptation and mitigation into food policy.
  3. Diets and Health – tackling undernutrition, obesity, and diet-related diseases through policy and innovation.

The event was held in a hybrid format. Catch the live stream of the GFPR 2025 South Asia Launch here.
