IFPRI EXPERTS LEAD ADVANCED ECONOMIC MODELLING PROGRAM FOR POLICY RESEARCHERS AT SKUAST-K

by IFPRI, South Asia | July 14, 2026

IFPRI conducted a week-long advanced capacity-building program on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modelling for Economic Policy Analysis, in collaboration with the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) at its Shalimar campus from June 29-July 4.

Organized by SKUAST-K's Institute of Business and Policy Research (IBPR), the program brought together researchers, academicians, policymakers, and development professionals from across the country for intensive, hands-on training in CGE modelling - CGE models help policymakers understand how decisions in one sector ripple across the entire economy, making them an indispensable tool for evidence-based policymaking.

Dr. Anjani Kumar, Senior Research Fellow at IFPRI, underscored the growing relevance of these analytical tools, noting that CGE modelling has become indispensable for understanding economic complexity and strengthening policy decisions through data-driven insights. Dr. Barun Deb Pal, Research Coordinator in IFPRI's Foresight and Policy Modeling unit, served as Lead Resource Person for the program, guiding participants through the technical foundations of CGE modelling and explaining how these models provide a powerful framework for assessing economic linkages and policy impacts across sectors.

Participants engaged in hands-on training sessions with IFPRI experts, learning how to build, calibrate, and apply CGE models to analyze real-world policy scenarios and strengthen data-driven decision-making.

SKUAST-K Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir A. Ganai, called advanced economic modelling central to designing sustainable and inclusive policy solutions. It was highlighted that this collaboration with IFPRI reinforces SKUAST-K's expanding global research partnerships and its growing role in economic policy research and institutional capacity building - a partnership that reflects IFPRI's continued investment in strengthening evidence-based policymaking capacity across South Asia.
