IFPRI Research Cited in Opinion Piece on India’s Low-Emissions Food Future

IFPRI RESEARCH CITED IN OPINION PIECE ON INDIA’S LOW-EMISSIONS FOOD FUTURE

by IFPRI, South Asia | July 10, 2026

In a recent opinion piece for The Week, "Rethinking India's food system for a low-emissions future," Sneha Singh, Managing Director of the Good Food Institute India, draws on IFPRI research to make the case for protein diversification as an underused lever in India's climate strategy.

The article cites IFPRI's projection that domestic protein demand in India will grow by 70 percent by 2050, driven by rising incomes, urbanization, and shifting diets. This figure frames a broader argument: that food systems, responsible for roughly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, deserve far more attention in climate conversations than they currently receive, particularly as India works toward its net-zero target by 2070.

The piece explores how alternative proteins like plant-based, fermentation-derived, and cultivated—could offer a lower-emissions path to meeting this rising demand, while highlighting opportunities for India's pulses, millets, and oilseed farmers to feed into emerging smart protein value chains.

It's a timely illustration of how IFPRI's data on food demand and consumption trends continues to inform policy and industry conversations on climate and food security well beyond the research community.
