As the nutrition community in India is steadily ramping up its collective action towards the goal of attaining malnutrition-free India by 2022, the nutrition research community, along with high-level policy stakeholders from the NITI Aayog, relevant ministries, and development partners gathered at a day-long event on "Delivering for Nutrition in India: Insights from Implementation Research" in New Delhi on 24 September 2019.

Since the start of the Green Revolution in the mid-1960s, India has tripled its wheat yield. Yet air pollution also rose steadily during this period, with deleterious impacts on crops. In a recent paper drawing on published literature, I estimate that the increases in ozone and aerosol pollutants across the northern Indian wheat belt have held yield growth back by about one third.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) undertook an evaluation of the impact of MFS on the agricultural knowledge of farmers in UP and organized a one-day stakeholder workshop in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on September 12, 2019 to share the results and findings of the study. The event was jointly hosted by IFPRI, the Government of Uttar Pradesh, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and was graced by the Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh – Mr. Surya Pratap Shahi – as the Chief Guest.

The National elections in India may well be over, but the persistent issue of malnutrition still holds the nation in its tight grip. And yet, of the myriads of topical issues that comprised political propaganda, including caste, religion, employment, farmer upliftment, and even social transfers, none of the political parties raised this critical issue. The twin problems of malnutrition and nutritional insecurity are particularly severe in rural India.

Despite broad economic progress, India continues to face persistent food insecurity, malnutrition, and high levels of stunting. This paradox is at the center of a new book by researchers at the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture andNutrition, Transforming Food Systems for a Rising India, which brings together the latest data and evidence to map out the currents state of Indian food systems. The book offers important insights to both development practitioners and researchers working in India and other developing countries. On June 6, the four co-authors launched the book at IFPRI, outlining what it will take to achieve a nutrition-secure future for India.
