IFPRI RESEARCHER’S PAPER FEATURED AMONG INFLUENTIAL ARTICLES ON FAMILY ECONOMICS

A paper coauthored by IFPRI Research Fellow Mehrab Bakhtiar was selected for The Economic Journal’s new Family Economics virtual issue, which brings together 11 “particularly influential and illuminating” articles spanning six decades of research on how families make decisions and shape economic outcomes.

The paper, “To Defer or to Differ: Experimental Evidence on the Role of Cash Transfers in Nigerian Couples’ Decision-Making,” was coauthored with Marcel Fafchamps, Markus Goldstein, Kenneth L. Leonard, and Sreelakshmi Papineni. Drawing on an experiment with married couples in Nigeria, the study examines household decision-making and how cash transfers to women affect their demand for agency and bargaining processes within households.
