POSHAN 2012

We are happy to announce a new editor for our POSHAN Abstract Digest, Dr. Rasmi Avula. Reviewing new and noteworthy studies on nutrition, this issue features a special issue of the Lancet on childhood pneumonia and diarrhea that updates severe disease and mortality estimates, examines cost estimates of effective interventions, and programmatic barriers to reduction of these two illnesses. In addition, the issue covers a variety of publications on vaccinations and nutrition; two studies illustrate the role of civil society organizations in achieving the goals of improved vaccination coverage -- one using multi-country case studies and another discussing the role of self-help groups in eradicating polio in Uttar Pradesh. The publications on nutrition highlight the importance of infant and young child feeding for child growth outcomes and provide evidence for how health workers can play a role in improving them. The findings from a multi-country study suggest that in addition to the critical 1000-day window for addressing undernutrition, adolescence presents another opportunity for interventions to improve nutrition into adulthood.
